Fort Hare Student Humiliated Publicly After Female Assault
Anathi Madikane, an art student in his final year at the University of Fort Hare (UFH) was humiliated publicly after assaulting a female student on campus. Anathi kicked the woman several times and was caught on video which has now become viral. It is alleged the abuse is his girlfriend. After the incident, Anathi Madikane, of the University of Fort Hare (UFH) in Alice, Eastern Cape has been apologizing on social media platforms and from the feedback of the people, he is not yet forgiven.
Videos of him on social media show Anathi being paraded by a large group of angry students and then admonished for his behavior in public by the group. It appears that the incident happened four days after President Cyril Ramaphosa, during an address on Women’s Day, called for an end to what he termed a violent war on women in South Africa. Ramaphosa in her address to the Women’s Day rally in Paarl in the Western Cape stated that “In towns small and large, in cities, in homes, in schools, in colleges, in universities, in parks and open spaces, a war is being waged in South Africa on women’s rights to security and equality. It is an affront to our common humanity,” “We must get it into our heads that we don’t own women, nor do we own their bodies, and we should not seek to dominate them.”
President Cyril Ramaphosa furthered that “The assault on the dignity and integrity of women has reached unprecedented levels. There is a real danger that because violence against women has become so pervasive that as a society we have gradually become unmoved and stopped seeing it as an aberration,” a minute of silence was observed for females that have been victims of abuse and died as he called on a gathering.
